Summary: Leslie McDevitt's Control Unleashed: The Puppy Program is meant as preventive medicine for puppy raisers. Many common behavior problems can be either prevented or minimized by starting a puppy with good foundation training from the beginning. In addition, this book provides a program that will help you create a puppy that is ready for sport-specific training at the appropriate age — a puppy with the ability to focus on whatever you want, for as long as you want, whenever you want.

Expanded Description:

Control Unleashed®: Creating a Focused and Confident Dog was written as a problem-solving book to help handlers with mature dogs that were having behavior problems during canine-sport training or competition. This book is different. Control Unleashed®: The Puppy Program is meant as “preventive medicine” for puppy raisers. Many common behavior problems can be either prevented or minimized by starting a puppy with good foundation training from the beginning. In addition, this book provides a program that will help you create a puppy that is ready for sport-specific training at the appropriate age—a puppy with the ability to focus on whatever you want, for as long as you want, whenever you want.

“Paying attention” is its own skill set and teaching it should be separate from teaching your puppy more complex behaviors. Without attention, you won’t get as far as you want with all those other behaviors you’re going to teach because it’s likely they will fall apart in the face of distraction. So it is wise to teach the attention skill set as the “base of operations” for your puppy training. The attention skill set includes: Discrimination skills, self-control skills, and arousal regulation skills.

The concepts and suggestions in this book can also be used for rescue dogs that, like puppies, are starting out as “blank slates” as far as your training is concerned.

The best puppy book for serious competitios, January 1, 2013
Reviewer: Tory
I loved this book so much! I got it as a Christmas present after much desperate begging. It shows an alternative to the isolation-method for puppies training to be working dogs (sport, service, etc.) and I really cannot say enough good about it.

thank you Leslie!, July 2, 2012
Reviewer: Lily
I have 2 heelers- 7 years and 10 weeks and I love the CU program for outlining so many techniques for positive success working with performance-driven dogs(or any dogs for that matter). The book is nicely organized and builds a good foundation for understanding your individual dog and learning concepts before stepping into training. CU incorporates all the concepts i learned to use with my first dog but I still found Leslie's book a great read, refresher course and addition to my 'training toolbox' for applying these concepts to early stages. It goes so much deeper than the average puppy book yet the information is clear, well organized and highlighted with real life experience so it would be easy for a novice to grasp and still have plenty to offer for the more experienced handler. Looking forward to the pattern games DVD next

Not just for puppies!, April 12, 2012
Reviewer: Barb S
This book is so accessible and understandable. I read Leslie's first book (Control Unleashed) about four years ago and found it wonderful, but I had to read and reread many sections to fully 'get it.' CU: The Puppy Program reads easily, yet really has a lot to teach. It clearly explains the whys and hows of each exercise, including common difficulties and how to handle them. And, while the book focuses on puppies, it's not just for puppies. Any dog will benefit from this book. This is now the first book I will recommend to new puppy/rescue dog owners.
