A lot of important basics all in one place, March 21, 2015 |
Reviewer: EM |
This would make a great gift for anyone about to bring a puppy into their life. This is the perfect book for first-time dog owners, or those who haven't had a dog in a long time. It explains all of the important basics in ONE approachable and clear book. I agree with the other reviewer that the tone about food is a little bit awkward, but the message definitely has good intentions. The more new puppy/dog owners that are encouraged to use their dog's food as a training opportunity, the better. I agree it could have been worded with the same tone as the rest of the book, which is extremely upbeat and encouraging. All in all, one of the best books out there if you are looking to recommend ONE book to a new dog owner! |

A few concerns, April 13, 2012 |
Reviewer: Kate A |
I have, for years, suggested Dr Yin as an excellent resource for clients. Most of this new book contains ideas and exercises I love and would be thrilled to have clients read practice. There are a few concerns I had about some of the tone - there is a comment in 5.1.1 about 'dumping food in a bowl is for people who are too lazy to spend quality time training and interacting with their pet.' There is something that feels a bit off about using guilt as a driving force for motiviating change in people when pormoting a positive reward-based training method for the dog. As for the layout - the book is GREAT. Love the pictures and very short sections of text - would be very user friendly for busy homes with new pups. I like so much I wanted to give more paws - however Dr Yin is experienced enough I feel less tolerant than I might otherwise regarding the issues of tone. |

The Importance of Early Training, April 9, 2012 |
Reviewer: Lisbeth Plant KPACTP |
Excellent, logical layout and plenty of illustrations make this book an easy read for the whole family, while preparing for Puppy's arrival. Sophia's Learn To Earn-program is a very good foundation for young puppies and their new owners and should be encouraged by breeders and trainers alike. Take a week off work and spend it training your new puppy, and you will have prevented so many problems down the line, like jumping up, chewing, barking, pulling on leash, etc! A great 'how to'-book for pet owners and professionals alike. |
