A Natural Combination -- Good Idea!, October 27, 2006 |
Reviewer: Betsy & Biscuit |
Well, I had to buy both books separately, because Dunbar's publisher hadn't yet decided to sell them as a single edition. Too bad for me, but too GOOD for the rest of you shoppers! Seriously, this content (Before and After) really belongs together, as it is only when you read one and then the other that you can possibly get a sense of what you're in for when you fall in love with your own little fluffy bundle of joy at the shelter or the breeder. Dr. Ian Dunbar is a bit of a guru in the dog-training world, and for good reason -- he was a trailblazer in positive training methods and he can back up his ideas with a few decades of experience. This book takes you through every major consideration and milestone in a dog's first couple of years, and tells you what to expect and what to do at each stage to help your dog become the very best companion he or she can be. Although at times I was intimidated by the author's suggestions (such as 'ask unfamiliar people to come over and play with your puppy by hosting weekly puppy parties,' or 'never, ever, ever let your puppy have a housetraining accident'), I could see the value of these suggestions and treated them as ideals towards which to strive rather than minimum acceptible requirements. The bottom line is, you can trust Ian Dunbar to provide you with solid information that works, in a style that is consistently entertaining. Biscuit says, 'Dunbar kept my mom laughing, and when Mom's happy, we're all happy! Buy it!' |

Puppy owner please read!, March 3, 2007 |
Reviewer: Theresa |
As a professional trainer, I recommend this book to all of my new puppy owners. It is easy for even the novice dog/puppy owner to understand. The instructions are easy to follow. The sections on crate training and house breaking are golden. Also, I love Ian's writing style. |

After You Get Your Puppy, January 7, 2009 |
Reviewer: Erin |
I read this book as part of a puppy obedience class curriculum and wasn't too fond of it for awhile. It has a GREAT section on bite inhibition that caused it to be worth the price. My biggest complaint (possibly only) is that it recommends allowing your dog a place to potty in the house (paper training). I completely disagree with this because from my experience and others' (including MANY trainers) allowing a puppy to soil in the house causes more issues in housetraining. Most people buying this book are probably getting it to help with their first puppy and it could cause major problems with housebreaking if the book is strictly followed.
Overall though, the book is decent. If you combine it with other books and knowledge on the subject it can be a great tool to have. |
