The best dog language DVD out there!, June 28, 2006 |
Reviewer: Rachel Gorwitz |
I got both of the Blue Dog DVD's about a month ago and having seen so many other similar products I thought this would be more of the same. Not so! The quality is amazing and Sarah Kalnajs is a fantastic and knowlegable speaker to listen to. The time flew by and I wished there was more to watch. I learned more from these two DVD sets than I have from any dog book or DVD in a very long time! I highly recommend The Lanugage of Dogs and Am I Safe for anyone who lives or works with dogs. |

Language of Dogs Brief Review
A fascinating exploration of postural communication in dogs, at an unprecedented depth. Being able to see multiple examples of each behavior is highly valuable as is the discussion of the distinction between behaviors that might superficially look the same. Focusing on looking at context and clusters of behavior is another valuable feature of this presentation. Sarah presents her information in a warm and funny manner. This DVD set would be valuable for anyone who wants to gain a better understanding of how dogs communicate stress, and distance increasing/decreasing behaviors.

I have been reading books, viewing videos/DVDs and attending seminars on understanding dog body language and evaluating behavior for several years. Besides owning four rescue dogs, I foster, consult with rescues, teach classes, provide private in-home training, petsit, host playgroups at my home and board clients' dogs. Understanding what they are communicating is crucial for every aspect of my work with dogs. Sarah's DVD is one of the best - the camerawork is clear, and her explanations are even better. You'll find yourself watching it more than once.

These videos are perfect for anyone who works with or shares their home with dogs!
There are many misconceptions when it comes to dog communication and Sarah does a fantastic job showing us the truth. She explains in detail how you can spot the signals and know exactly what they mean. You will walk away with a clear picture of how dogs communicate with people and other dogs. And, you will find yourself watching the videos over and over again! |

National Geographic - You should check this out., June 30, 2006 |
Reviewer: Nancy Abplanalp |
I have shown this DVD set to my Dog Days of Summer campers - ages 8 to 18 and to my adult students. Every person came away from the viewing with a much greater awareness of the meaning behind dog behavior and a new found respect for the subtleties and richness of dog language. They have all been impressed by the enormous lengths dogs will go to in order to avoid biting. Each one of my students has been able to demonstrate a much clearer understanding of their own and other dogs' behavior. My students also believe that Sarah is excellent at imitating a dog!
I have watched this DVD set repeatedly with my students - to answer questions, relate behaviors to known dogs, and provide additional feedback. I have yet to tire of my repeated viewings. Sarah - excellent job. I highly recommend this DVD to the general public as well as to dog professionals. Prepare to be entertained and enlightened. |

Great book for dog lovers of any level, April 26, 2007 |
Reviewer: Lisa Mullinax |
The Language of Dogs is an excellent resource for those who want to learn more about dog behavior. It is mandatory viewing for all of our training staff and I frequently recommend it to clients to help them understand their dogs better. They always report that they are amazed at how much better they can recognize the signals their dogs are sending.
Being able to recognize signs of stress in dogs is an invaluable skill and Sarah has compiled a great collection of videos to educate trainers, shelter workers and dog lovers.
This video is not a 'how to' on fixing behavior problems, but rather a tool to learn how to recognize subtle signals, a crucial first step before beginning any behavior modification program!
If I could give it more than 5 Paws, I would!

Something for everyone!, July 13, 2006 |
Reviewer: Shana McLaughlin |
This is invaluable not only to professional dog trainers, but also to dog owners and anyone else who may come into contact with dogs. Our dog trainer showed this dvd to a number of us over the course of a couple of evenings. I had no idea how many different signals your dog has for conveying excitement, stress, contentment, etc. I will never again assume a dog is approachable simply because the dog is wagging his tail. This dvd has helped me to become a lot more savvy in my interactions with my own dogs, as well as how to approach a strange dog. A must buy. |

Title very misleading, July 28, 2006 |

The title to this DVD was very misleading. Maybe it should have been titled 'How to assess dogs in shelters' . I don't see how it helps pet owners. I was very disappointed. I have no use for this DVD. |

Quite a Contribution---Thank you!!, July 31, 2006 |
Reviewer: Lynn Hoover |
These DVDs are about a range of sometimes very subtle signals that dogs use as they interact with humans, other animals, and their environment. They will be of most value to dog professionals and owners who appreciate and want to understand dogs as unique entities with their own way of being in the world. They are the best that I have seen for teaching us to tune in to subtle cues and help us read dogs in their language.

This will really help with our dog!, July 31, 2006 |
Reviewer: Ellen K. |
My family got a 2 year old dog from a shelter a few months ago and our trainer recommended this DVD to us to help us understand our dog's body language better. We just watched it and thought it was great. I feel much safer knowing that now I will know not to tell my kids the wrong things, like that a dog is happy because they are wagging their tail! The presenter was really interesting and fun to listen to and we all learned a lot. |

Fantastic!, July 31, 2006 |
Reviewer: Jamie Bozzi, Dog Trainer, APDT, ABMA |
The Language of Dogs dvd contains excellent footage of canine body language. Sarah has captured behaviors that are very difficult to get on film. Dog body language can be so subtle, such as a 'look away,' or 'sweaty paws' (which can only be seen on particular surfaces), and certain eye and facial movements. Illustrations and photographs can only show so much. This dvd, along with Sarah's poignant lecture, points out important posturing that dogs engage in on a daily basis. You will see behavior that you never knew had actual meaning. Dogs are always talking to us, and this dvd is an incredible insight into dogs' mode of communication. |

Excellent, October 2, 2006 |
Reviewer: Caryl Wolff, CPDT, NADOI, CDBC |
So much of dog training is focused on what we want the dogs to do and how we want them to do it. But there is little information until now on how dogs are responding to us and/or the environment in which we train. 'The Language of Dogs' helps us read dogs so we can determine whether they understand what we say or whether we need to change something about how we say it to make our message clearer -- are they blowing us off, or are they so nervous they can't concentrate? It also shows us how to read our dogs' behavior in everyday situations. Armed with this knowledge, we can intervene if necessary and avert a crisis situation or simply enjoy the occasion with our dogs.
Sarah breaks down our dogs' body language into its component parts and then explains each part with clarity. The footage is easy to view and easy to follow -- in way too many seminars and videos, the speaker apologizes about the poor quality of the video saying that it's out of focus or the dogs are in shade or the camera angle is bad. Not so here. The lighting is excellent as is the camera work.
I highly recommend 'The Language of Dogs' to both trainers and owners.

All Dog Owners Should Watch This Very Viewable DVD, November 23, 2006 |
Reviewer: Joe Sullivan |
Wow! These DVDs really helped my wife and I understand our dogs. All dog owners should view these DVDs. Dog owners with children should repeatedly view these DVDs WITH THEIR CHILDREN! If your dog is showing teeth is he smiling at you or warning you to stay away? When he goes down and rolls on his back is he being playful or fearful? What does it mean when he jumps up or raises his paw? What type of wagging tail mean it is safe to approach a dog and what type of tail wagging means you had better stay away from the dog? If you want to know the answers to these questions or if you want to learn how to avoid being bitten then watch these DVDs.
I have seen other dog behavior videos where the commentator describes the dog behavior very clinically – basically at a distance. That made watching those videos far more difficult than watching these DVDs. Sarah’s style is very personal, credible and layered. She forms a relationship with each dog that she analyzes and invites you in to join her. The relationship is real and she cares about every dog she studies. If the dog is behaving is ways that are insulting to her then she will give the clinical description but also say, “This dog hates me”. Likewise she acknowledges when dogs are being sweet, “Adopt this dog to a family with 16 children”. This makes for a very viewable DVD set. |

Must Have for Shelters!, January 3, 2007 |
Reviewer: Marilyn Wolf, BS, CPDT |
I think every shelter and dog rescue should try to purchase a set of these DVDs. The movement of people and dogs, both subtle and gross, are invaluable in helping staff and dogs be both safe and comfortable. A perfect preface to the DVD set 'Am I Safe?'
My biggest problem is finding the time for everyone to view it. We've borrowed a DVD-TV combination for the shelter and are going to try and set up a training time every week until we get through them. We will watch, discuss and do live demos, when possible. |

Invaluable for Shelters and Rescues, January 9, 2007 |
Reviewer: Mandy Crooks |
As the Behavior Counselor for a No-Kill for Space shelter, the DVD set is an invaluable training tool for staff and volunteers. This is a modern way of looking at dog communication that is palatable for folks with more old-school approach.
Sarah’s use of video clips and live demos was really amazing. She has an amazing ability to point to a particular part of the dog’s body and/or behavior and say what it means. Some other seminars leave you feeling more confused than when you came in because the presenter is unable to operationally define the posture, the behavior or lack thereof that made them feel a certain way. But not this one! This is the kind of seminar that leaves you energized and ready to tackle another day of shelter work! Having these DVD’s in your library will allow a group to train any number of staff and volunteers. It’s such an affordable option for non-profits! Sending one person to a seminar only puts the knowledge in that person’s head! |

This is a great video for anyone wanting to see examples of all different behaviors. Was disappointed with the fact she did not evaluate and explain in more detail the behaviors and how to interperate them. This is great for anyone handling dogs. You must have some back ground in body language to understand what she is trying to tell you it is very quick jumping from topic to topic. |

I loved these DVDs!, February 22, 2007 |
Reviewer: Kim Elberg |
I really loved these DVDs! I watched both of them (there is a second one called 'Am I Safe'). They were fascinating to watch and easy to understand. My vet recommended that I watch them as I'm having some problems with one of my dogs and she couldn't have given me better advice. It's so plain to me after watching the DVD's that my dog was stressed and afraid and I didn't see the signs. I watched 'Am I Safe' because I liked the first one so much and while I don't work professionally with dogs, I really learned a lot from that one as well. Thank you Sarah! |

Golden Retriever Rescue of WI uses these to train our volunteers. One of our assessors recently credited the DVD set in saving her from becoming a victim of a dog bite. She viewed DVDs,knew how to read the signals, recognized the dog escalating & prevented herself from being biten. I've watched the set many times & each time I learn something new. I recommend the DVD for everyone from pet owners, shelters, vet techs, clinics, rescues, etc.

Great Educational Tools!, February 23, 2007 |
Reviewer: Hannah Glass |
Language of Dogs was very informative and a great instructional tool about the many behaviors dogs exhibit. The information was very clear and concise. The most important thing I learned from watching this DVD were the differences in behavior among the breeds. I work at a Doggie Daycare/Kennel and encounter many different breeds. It is comforting to know how to approach and assess a dog of any breed w/o any bias. This instructional DVD was great to watch and I would recommend it to anyone who wants to gain more knowledge about canine body language. |

For those of us who need to SEE it..., March 3, 2007 |
Reviewer: Kate A. |
I loved the video clips - watched the whole thing through 3 times right after I got it and kept seeing even more each time I watched. I even got my co-workers hooked!
As a dog trainer and shelter worker it is great to have a tool that actually SHOWS people what we're talking about. I found it very refreshing to be looking strickly at a dogs behavior - not focus on the modification or training aspects. This is not a DVD set designed to teach you to train your dog or change behaviors. This tool is simply about learning to SEE what the dog is trying to tell you. Let the trainers teach people how to change behavior - use this DVD to teach you how to identify behaviors! |

Seeing is understanding dogs, March 15, 2007 |
Reviewer: Tami Hawes |
I'm one of those visual people. I loved Turid's second edition 'Calming Signals' because there were more pictures. Then we got Brenda's 'Canine Body Language' and we got lots more pictures along with what we were seeing.
Sarah talks to us about what we are seeing and where things fit in. Is this stress? Is it submission? Is it aggression? As mentioned there is no discussion of training, except in once case. They show a dog that had a fear of men and how after being brought home and developed confidence how it changed within a month's time in its behavior and made the dog more adoptable.
This is clearly a recorded seminar with participants questions included in the display because it aids in the presentation. There are several mentions of 'tomorrow' made as another reviewer noted. The second set of DVDs is her 'Am I Safe?' where they go over behavior assessments.
This is a 2 DVD set with over two hours of video clips. It has a nicely formated menu system so that if you wanted to go back and relook at a particular behavior you can quickly jump to that on the DVD.
The reason the sets are not sold together is because this set is one for 'everyone' interested in learning how dogs communicate with each other and with us. The other set is aimed at trainers and shelter/rescue workers.
Very cool learning the difference in behaviors that decrease and increase distance. People would be surprised at their interpretation that a dog is trying to get them to come pet it, when in actuality the dog would love nothing more than for you to go further away.
If your budget is limited and you aren't sure which to get Sarah's or Brenda's - get this one. |

So good!, April 24, 2007 |
Reviewer: Bunny Carlos |
This was an excellent DVD! I've been telling every 'dog person' I know about it.
This DVD was very well set up with lots of examples of each behavior addressed. There was a lot of thought put into the presentation of this product - and Sarah Kalnajs has a very easy lecturing style, which keeps you interested throughout the entire 2 hours.
I do some volunteer work at my local shelter, and this DVD has helped me immensely in understanding what the dogs are trying to tell me. Since I mainly do grooming at the shelter, it's been instrumental in helping me realize when a dog is showing signs of stress. I now know when to back off and try a different approach, which makes their grooming experience a lot easier.
But you don't need to be a shelter worker to get a lot out of this DVD. 'The Language of Dogs' is also an excellent tool for the average pet owner. If you're at all interested in how dogs communicate, buy this!! |

One of the speakers that we enjoyed so much was Sarah Kalnajs and we just had to purchase her DVD The Language of Dogs to bring back to our group. I always like to review all DVD's first before presenting to the class. I was so impressed by the whole DVD. It is the best I have ever seen on body language and communication signals. It was easy to follow and understand. I was so excited after watching this that I will be presenting this DVD next week to the class and ordering real soon her other DVD. |

Reviewer: Nick H |
I found this DVD very informative and well done. I learned some new things I hadn't known before. I did have a few problems with it. I found that some of the behavior being shown, they would just skim right over it but would focus a lot more time on others. I really would have liked to see expanded pieces on some of the behaviors and a more in-depth view of them, which I think this DVD lacked in some of the behavior. I also feel that some of the behavior portrayed had alternate interpretations not made known in this DVD.
Overall, although this DVD was well done and informative, I feel it lacked more in-depth, and necessary information. I don't think this is a DVD geared towards a dog owner but certainly has a place in a shelter or other like area where staff meet and interact with unfamiliar dogs on a regular basis. |

Excellent- A Must-Have for anyone with a dog, July 7, 2009 |
Reviewer: Crystal Saling |
This has been a staple in my libary. I probably learned more from this video than most of the other videos or books in my collection. Sarah Kalnajs puts on a very good seminar. The production quality is excellent, the examples are excellent and to answer one of the other reviewer's questions - knowing what your dog is saying (after all they are 'talking' to you all the time) is crucial to a very deep relationship with your dog. It is also imperitive that anyone who is training their dog recognize when their dog is unduly stressed- since stressed animals don't learn very well. |
|
 |
An excellent value!, October 27, 2009 |
Reviewer: David B |
I do wish it had better lighting and production quality. Especially on the seminar parts, where lighting and production could be better controled than in a shelter enviroment. But this DVD set (2), is very much worth the money spent! I shared it with one of the rescue groups I volunteer for. There, I was able to see it on a large projection screen. The large screen added a lot, by being able to better observe the behaviors over a home TV system. That marked the third time I have sat through the entire DVD since I got it about mid-summer. That's getting your money's worth! There are quite a few Hollywood big production movies I don't even give a second screening to.
The DVD set could be made a required part of shelter staff and volunteer training to the benefit of all. |

Training Necessity, October 21, 2010 |

For years I've tried to find better ways to train shelter workers for handling a wide range of dogs. A training necessity for anyone handling dogs as a profession. |

Reviewer: Kristy O'donnell |
This DVD is a great tool to help clarify communication with dogs. I was looking to gain more information regarding communication signals and the DVD displayed both verbal and visual examples. I liked that the communication sections were broken down into sub categories and there were examples of all the communication signs at the end. This would be very helpful for anyone who is looking to get into the training aspect or for those who are in the rescue field! |

Wonderful Overview, March 11, 2011 |
Reviewer: Michelle M Grimes CPDT-KA |
Having been in the 'dog world' for 8 years, this video was still a great review for me. I enjoyed seeing the same behavior from different dogs and different angles, giving it a different perception. Slow motion shots were great and as Sarah says, never let your guard down. Those who work with dogs often might tend to stop seeing small behaviors that tell so much and this video was a wonderful way to not only see the behaviors but hear about them as well. If you're a visual and audio type learner, this video is for you. As a mentor to a few great 'new-bies' I'm excited to share this video with them and discuss what is being watched. It's sure to be an eye-opening experience for sure. Highly recommended to those newly in our profession (and those not so new as well) |

Stand up and pay attention!, March 5, 2012 |
Reviewer: carolyn allen |
As co-founder of a local animal rescue, I found this DVD a real asset. Our group primarily works with Indian Reservations via spay/neuter clinics, medical assistance and rehoming any unwanted dogs. This DVD made me realize I need to pay attention to the sometimes subtle signals dogs give off and be mindful of my own body language. Rez dogs are skilled at avoiding humans and yet these are the very dogs we work with and handle. Sarah gives priceless tips for working with a population which often has fear based aggression. The slow motion footage is extremely valuable. I watched it over and over again. I also appreciated Sarah breaking down and pointing out body language like tails, ears, look aways etc... |

Not just for dog junkies!, December 8, 2012 |
Reviewer: Amelia Looper |
Obviously, anyone working in dog training or rescue will benefit from reviewing body language with this DVD. What surprised me is how eager many of my non-dog crazy friends and family were to watch it. Seeing a broad range of signals prompted helpful discussions of 'I've seen him do that' and 'Oh that's what that is?'. In other words, just about anyone with a dog or an interest in dogs can enjoy and learn from this awesome compilation! The video quality is so good and the amount of commentary sufficient that it's very easy to follow what's happening in a given interaction. |

Awesome!, January 30, 2013 |
Reviewer: Lynn Broderick |
This is one of my most valuable dvd's! Sarah and company did a fantastic job putting together video with lots and lots of examples of dog body language! Very thorough coverage of the signs of stress, warning signs of increasing arousal (which can lead to aggression) and Sarah explains them all so clearly. Chapters make it easy to find and play the behavior you're looking for if you don't want to watch it all the way through.
I have used this and 'Am I Safe?' for group presentations and with private clients and it's gratifying to hear comments later about how the participants now SEE the behaviors when they observe dogs, and feel like they can interpret what the dogs are feeling so much better. Highly recommended! |

Reviewer: Chiara Perri |
I found this DVD to be fabulous in that there are real live clips of dogs doing their stuff and seeing it play out is much clearer than pictures. Hearing the explanations for the behaviours was also helpful as some can be confusing and there were some I was not even aware of. I would highly recommend this DVD to anyone wanting to get into the dog training and behaviour industry and even for someone running a day care centre. Being pre-emptive seems to make all the difference and once you have an understanding of their language, it makes everything a lot clearer. Thank you. |

Exceptional, August 1, 2013 |
Reviewer: Leanne |
I found this DVD exceptional in explaining and demonstrating canine body language. Sarah did an amazing job in providing detailed images, videos and explanations on various body languages you would see on a day to day basis when working with dogs. I especially liked the fact that she used various dogs in various stages of stress, calm, and reactiveness and reviewed in detail what to look for and the way she explained the difference between analyzing a dog’s behaviour based on the situation(s) the dog(s) are placed in (i.e. stress) vs. everyday language you would typically see and wouldn’t think twice about when approaching dog(s)!
I would recommend this DVD to anyone who has a dog and/or works with dogs in any situation!!! |
