Must Read, March 27, 2003 |
Reviewer: Elyse Grau |
This is a wonderful book. It is so moving and beautiful, and every page really gives you something to think about. I have already read it twice. I think much of what the author says about relationships with dogs could apply to people, too. The only thing more that I would have liked to see from this book would have been suggestions on how to implement some of her ideas. If you own a dog, you need to read this book! |

This book moved me to strive to become more in touch with my dog. I felt that I had a good relationshp with my animals but this book only served to show me that I could do better for my dog and I. The concepts reviewed in the book were just astonishing. A must read for the true animal lover. Insight in death and life for you and your dog. |

A wonderful book and a great reality check for all those moments we take our dogs for granted! This book reminds us that our relationship with all life is paramount and to never misuse our dog's trust. I work as a groomer and trainer and gave this book as a Christmas gift to every veterinarian and pet care professional I know. It's that important. |

Outstanding!!, June 9, 2006 |
Reviewer: Braveheart |
I think this is one of the best books on dogs ever written. It gives all of us who live with, work with and love dogs a whole lot to think about. Suzanne Clothier isn't afraid to admit that dogs have emotions and feelings. Her writing style is easy to read and her stories are inspirational. She is the real Dog Whisperer (shame she doesn't have a show on National Geographic channel!) |

Beautiful Training Philosophy, July 27, 2006 |
Reviewer: E.v. Noechel |
This isn't a training manual, more a living manual. I recommend this book to all my beginning dog training students. It encourages a positive and holistic attitude toward training in a riveting, artfully written book that appeals to handlers of all training levels. I appreciated how the book touched on the downfall of harsh methods and emphasises the important job we have of constantly enriching our relationships with our dogs. In turn, those relationships grow into excellent training. |

A life-changing book (especially for the dogs!), April 30, 2007 |
Reviewer: Ann Dupuis / Your Dream Dog |
“Bones Would Rain from the Sky” is a must-read for anyone wanting a deeper understanding of dogs and our relationships with them. This book contains a wealth of information on relationship-based training and dog behavior, all explored with Suzanne Clothier’s blend of wisdom and experience. If you truly want to enhance your relationship with your dog, start here.
I’m currently re-reading this book. (I come back to it often, to remind myself that relationship is everything…) This was one of the first books I read when I set out to learn everything I could about dogs and training (spurred on by two 'difficult' dogs), and it shaped the path I took toward professional dog training. |

An Absolute Must-Read for dog lovers and trainers, June 8, 2007 |
Reviewer: Lisa Harmon |
This is a very profound book, eloquently written. I laughed and I cried in several places in this book, and I really thought about the relationships I have with my own dogs. It comes from a place of deep understanding that springs from real life experiences. If you only read one book about dogs, make it this one! |

Notable book, January 9, 2008 |
Reviewer: Brenda Cox |
This is not a how to book - it is so much more! I have directed people to this book on many occasions especially people who insist on using correction based or strictly pack hierarchy based methods...I grew as a dog owner and trainer of my own dogs by reading this book and I know of others who have had the same experience. Well written, humorous and not preachy - you will come away changed and with a deeper understanding of dogs. I re-read sections of this great book often and in fact I am due to re-read it cover to cover very soon. |

I hate to be the party pooper..., August 9, 2008 |
Reviewer: Crystal Saling |
...but I just didn't like this book. I think if you really like relationship books this will be right down your ally. I just don't have time to read a book for fun and I didn't learn very much from this book. The chapter about resource guarding was good and I did learn alot, and the book has fabulous quotable passages- some that will probably end up on my website. But over all (I'm embarrassed to say) I thought it was excrutiatingly boring. |

Reviewer: Jinger Guinn |
I haven't even finished reading this book and it is one of the best I've read lately. I just started reading and am about half way and I have an agressive dog and now I'm beginning to understand a bit more about how my dog is thinking. It was like reading my own story right from the get go! |

I loved it., September 24, 2008 |
Reviewer: Virginia D. |
I found this book absolutely beautiful. It gave me so much to think about. Having a deep relationship with my dogs is very, very important to me, so I instantly wanted this book as soon as I came upon it.
Suzanne Clothier is a wonderful writer and I was very absorbed in each chapter. It showed me things about my relatioship with my dogs that were great, and the things we're working on.
I loved reading the stories about the dogs of her clients and her own dogs. It's great to read stories of such close relationships and the ways the owners and dogs have *together* conquered their problems.
This book is so worth the read. |

Inspiring, July 27, 2010 |
Reviewer: Jennifer Shirley |
This is such a beautifully written book and I became depressed as I neared the end of it. Suzanne writes with humor, clarity and great compassion. This should be mandatory reading for every person who shares her/his home with a dog. I highly recommend this book, even if you believe you already know everything there is to know about dogs. |

Not a Training Manual, But Great Food for Thought, March 11, 2012 |
Reviewer: Amelia Looper |
This book is a series of mid-length essays on just about every doggy topic, from resource guarding and leash behavior to play and aging. There are few specific protocols, but thoughtful examinations of things we take for granted. For example, the chapter on leash walking points out that we want our dogs to be attentive to us, but are masters at ignoring them over the course of our walks. You can't help but more greatly empathize with your dog after reading this! |

Every dog owner should read this, June 7, 2012 |
Reviewer: Jodie |
Initially I noticed many fellow dog folk picking this book up at a conference. Deciding it must be something special I joined in and it was the best purchase I made!
This book is one that I recommend to all my dog friends. There is humor, inspiration, motivation, and learning all enclosed under the cover. In the process of training a large breed dog, I found myself getting a bit flustered with a few behaviors/responses my dog was displaying, at just the right time a few pages in this book got me back on track and boosted my mental outlook on what I was doing and to keep on the positive track and not fall into cultivating a one way controlling relationship but to keep open communication and let my dog learn how to be a part of the world around her and still be connected to me. This book also has some good points for becoming a better communicator/listener with people too.
Invaluable read! Thank you Suzanne. My dogs love you for writing this book. |
