Expanded Description:

A Dog World Top 12 Training and Behavior Book - 2010!

Dogs have deliberate, subtle, and often humorous ways of expressing themselves. Canine Behavior - A Photo Illustrated Handbook includes 1,000 images of dogs, wolves, coyotes, and foxes. It was created for everyone interested in dogs—pet owners, trainers, veterinarians, ethologists, and behaviorists. Using the interdisciplinary language of photography, Barbara Handelman illustrates and explains canine behavior and communication. Her book establishes a common understanding and vocabulary for people interested in, and working with, dogs.

Canine Behavior is structured in many user-friendly ways, including alphabetical organization of the terminology, cross referencing, and, both a detailed table of contents, and an index. Those interested in both wild and domestic dog behavior will spend hours, if not years, studying and learning from this book.

An encyclopedic resource for all dog lovers and dog professionals
· Learn how to interpret behavior. For example, is it aggression or fear you’re seeing?
· Find out how anatomy affects behavioral displays and communication.
· Trainers can use it for teaching students to interpret important behavioral expressions.
· Gain a thorough understanding of how dogs learn.

Bonus! Test your knowledge with a photographic question and answer section.

What canine ethologists and behaviorists are saying about Barbara Handelman’s Canine Behavior
The pictures speak for themselves and illustrate magnificently the various aspects of canine behavior. In addition, the accompanying text gives good and sound explanations and the author keeps it all in an easily accessible language. Highly commendable. All serious students of canine behavior should include this book in the Dog Language and Evolution of Canine Social Behavior

It's said that a picture is worth a thousand words and Barbara Handelman shows how true this is. Dogs around the world will surely benefit from this easy to read book.
Marc Bekoff, Professor Emeritus at the University of Colorado, and author of The Emotional Lives of Animals

Canine Behavior has the best array of illustrations of canid behavior that we've ever seen. The inclusion of Monty Sloan's photographs of wolves at Wolf Park gives a perspective to the book that is varied, in-depth, and unusual in the literature. The photos and illustrations show subtle motions that make up a sequence of motor patterns so critical for canid communication or performance.
Raymond and Lorna Coppinger, Co-authors of Dogs: A New Understanding of Canine Origin, Behavior, and Evolution

An extremely thorough reference work.
James O'Heare, CABC, author of Aggressive Behavior in Dogs and The Dog Aggression Workbook

Barbara Handelman has been a Clinical Mental Health Counselor for forty years. Her early work focused on relationship therapy with non-verbal children. In that context, Handelman became a careful observer of human body language. Studying the ways dogs use their bodies to communicate became a natural extension of her work with children. She is now a Certified Dog Behavior Consultant (CDBC) specializing in training assistance dogs for people with disabilities. She is the author of Clicker Train Your Own Assistance Dog DVD/CD. Barbara lives in Norwich, Vermont with her husband, Bob, their Aussie, Moon, German Shepherd, Luca, and their Collie, Pan.

What reviewers are saying...

MY PET WORLD
“There aren't many books out there with 1,000 photos of dogs (and also wolves) expressing themselves. You'll see signs of mild stress, which range from a paw lift to lip licking to blinking. A yawn may simply mean a dog is tired, or indicate stress. Stretching can also be a sign of stress. Dogs are constantly communicating non-verbally. This book is a must for anyone truly interested in translating what canines are saying.” Steve Dale

MIDWEST BOOK REVIEW
“Dog and canine lovers are in for a treat if they pick up "Canine Behavior: A Photo Illustrated Handbook". Featuring one thousand photos covering everything from common dogs to wolves, foxes, and coyotes, "Canine Behavior" is complete and comprehensive in its coverage of canine species. Alongside the black and white photography are examinations of canine behavior with tips for dog owners peppered throughout. "Canine Behavior: A Photo Illustrated Handbook" is a must have for any dog person and for community library pets/wildlife collections.” James A. Cox

Another Photo Guide? Yes!, October 21, 2010
Reviewer: DogCatcher
I already had the Abrantes and Aloff books. So how could I justify another photo guide? Well, I had seen the author in training videos and heard good reviews. Luckily I needed it for a class! This is the best photo guide, yet.

CANINE BEHAVIOR
A photo illustrated handbook Barbara Handelman, M.Ed. CDBC

Do you know this book? This book is gold.
Have you ever wished you could put your hands on a visual canine ethogram. Stop looking, this is it or something very close to it. The author, a trained psychotherapist has been working with and teaching children with linguistic disabilities all her life and has acquired skills as a professional photographer when trying to catch and freeze moments of her own children’s life in time. This enabled her to develop an exquisite sense of observation with children and with her animals. She was always surrounded by animals and was fascinated by their behaviors. Now she puts her training to use to enable us to better understand what these animals do.
This book is at its second edition. For those of you who do not have it already, have a look you will not be disappointed. Barbara has included not less than 1000 photos of canine behavior and terminology to enable us to use the appropriate vocabulary when we talk about canines. The fact that she was a psychotherapist has enabled her to share some elements regarding learning theories. Barbara has succeeded in making visible all kinds of canine behavior that we would never have been able to see for ourselves. Also Barbara was able to show how they express stress and how many signals they have to express this. In fact the incredible amount of stress expressing signals surprised her. For her it was a very important discovery. All the photos are identified and commented.

For those of you who have copies from the first printing, you will see that in the new version the reproduction of the pictures is vastly improved, allowing all the detail in the photos to be clear and crisp. The text is essentially unchanged but the improved quality of photos makes such a huge difference that it is worth buying the book again!
I recommend this book to anyone who is fascinated with animal behaviors particularly canines.
