Excellent, August 14, 2003 |
Reviewer: dog mom |
This is a great book. I've read just about every book on obedience there is and, IMO, this is one of the 2 best (Terri Arnold's 3 vol series is the other one.) They also manage to walk the line between positives and corrections.
The other neat thing is that they often present 2 different approaches to teaching something. |

A Must Have for Serious Obedience Trainers, January 3, 2005 |
Reviewer: Judy Bos |
I recently received Competition Obedienced: A Balancing Act.as a gift. I found the book very comprehensive in all aspects of obedience training at all levels. I especially liked the fact that the authors presented their preferred training method but did not dismiss other ways. I thought each section was clearly presented in text and accompanying illustrations. I liked the possible problems section and how to solve them and proofing techniques. You can easily see that these authors have lived the obedience experience at all levels. |

Very helpful book, December 21, 2006 |
Reviewer: Just starting out |
This book is easy to read and understand with excellent illustrations, and is laid out to work well as a cover-to-cover read or as a reference book. As a newbie to competition obedience, I bought this book as a companion to working with a trainer and it is an excellent companion as it explains some of my questions, offers alternate techniques when we stall, and does not contradict what we've already learned. |

This book does an excellent job at explaining the different obedience exercises from Novice to Utility. The authors outline how to train each exercise, and offer different ways of training so you can pick the one that is best for your dog. It presents a balanced approach to training, using positive reincorcement, as well as corrections (but not an overwhelming amount). |

Help for All Levels, January 22, 2008 |

I find this to be a good all-around book for novice through utility; however, there were some sections where I wish they would have been a little more detailed in explaining how to train certain elements. |

We found this book to be extremely helpful. Originally, we bought the book because of retrival problems- the dog would not have anything to do with the dumbell. The earpinch method was not an option. After less than 3 weeks our dog is retriving the dumbell from a distance and over the jump, returning to front and waiting for the 'give' command. But since owning what is now referred to as our dog training 'bible' we are backing up and retraining some other areas such as off-leash heeling which has been an ongoing issue. I especially like the proofing sections to really see if the exercise was learned. |

A Must!, September 19, 2011 |

While I have a number of books on dog training - many of them quite good - increasingly I find this is my 'go to' book when I encounter a problem or begin training a new task. Recommend it for any competitive obedience trainer's bookshelf. |

Very Comprehensive, March 11, 2012 |
Reviewer: LabbiesForMe |
When I decided to get into obedience with my agility dog, I wasn't sure where to start. I took a mentor's advice and ordered this book. WOW! EVERY exercise for AKC obedience is explained and broken down in this book. There are many helpful pictures and diagrams, and it is EASY to understand and train these methods yourself. Read this cover to cover! |
