Good read, well thought out!, August 20, 2006 |
Reviewer: Lynne Gifford |
I am currently about 3/4 of the way through this book and have found it very well thought out and thoroughly enjoyable. One of the most comprehensive books out there on dealing with fearful dogs. Nicole does an excellent job on laying out protocol ideas for various fears, and covers in depth anything that could be related to these fears. From nutrition, to exercise, to other various resources I find it to be a great addition to any dog owners or trainers library. |

Highly recommend!, September 6, 2006 |
Reviewer: Janice Mitchell |
I highly recommend this book! I've been involved with Sheltie Rescue for 12 years, and we rehabilitate puppy mill dogs and unsocialized dogs which are afraid of anythng and everything. Also, I co-teach a class for shy/fearful dogs at our local Humane Society. This is the first book I have found that covers EVERYTHING needed to know to work with or help these dogs! Plus, it's an easy read and humorous! |

Sensible, practical, effective, September 23, 2006 |
Reviewer: Dani Weinberg |
This book presents one of the most sensible, practical, and effective approaches to dealing with fear and aggression. It will be useful for both the professional trainer/behavior consultant and for the dog owner who should be able to work through the various exercises on her/his own. It is indeed 'comprehensive,' as advertised, including information on every aspect I can think of relating to the subject - and I'm a professional trainer and behavior consultant. I recommend it highly. |

Oh no, Nicole wrote my book, October 2, 2006 |
Reviewer: Caryl Wolff |
As a dog trainer, I'm always looking for good books that I can recommend to clients whose dogs have difficult behaviors, and this book is one of them. I've wanted to put my own handouts in book form for some time, and now I don't have to -- I can refer them to Help for Your Fearful Dog, which is a great resource. The instructions are clearly written and easy to follow. Nicole offers solutions that not only involve training but also complementary therapies as well. There are many lists, photos, and diagrams which complement the text. The Tail End Wrap-Up which summarizes the salient points in each chapter is especially helpful. Nice job!

A Must Have for Fearful Dog(s) Owners, December 5, 2006 |
Reviewer: Tami Hawes |
Nicole sent me a copy to review months ago and I've owed this review for a number of weeks.
I have two fearful dogs and I love this book! Nicole breaks down what a fearful dog is versus an aggressive dog. We learn how to break down our dogs fears into recognisable signs and levels so that we can keep track of our dog's progress. She shows us the kind of charts that she used for her dog as well as client dogs.
Anyone who has read any of my other reviews knows that I love pictures and this book as plenty of them!
The book is broken up into three sections. There's learning up front on what to look for, some on nutrition and exercise. Then we learn about skills that we need to train our dog to have to be successful in carrying out the last section of the book - the various guides to dealing with specific fears.
As someone mentioned, Nicole also goes over medications - prescribed and alternative that you can use with your dog.

I Love this book!, December 20, 2006 |
Reviewer: Patty Crichton |
I have shelves full of dog and training books, some of which I refer to often before a client arrives (I don't have time anymore to sit and read whole books 'for fun'; I read pertinent chapters/pages as issues come up). I seem to be using Nicole's book almost every day. In fact I enjoyed it so much, that I took it on my vacation to read on the plane, and normally I don't want to read anything to do with dogs on a vacation!
I know Nicole personally, but that doesn't bias my review. This is by far her best book and I've loved all her others. If you're a trainer, you shouldn't be without it. |

Every Trainer Needs This Book!, May 28, 2007 |
Reviewer: Nannette Morgan |
As a professional dog trainer and behavior consultant I have to say this is a 'must have' on every professional's bookshelf as well as many dogowner's. As have many of Nicole's books in the past, this one lived up to its name. Not only is it helpful but it is written in 'plain English' and with a lot of humor to boot! I now make a habit of consulting the wonderful bullet-point summary at the end of each chapter before I finish my behavior treatment plans just to make sure I haven't forgotten another great suggestion that my clients will want to try out!
I also like how Nicole delves into complementary therapies such as TTouch, aromatherapy, Flower Essences and more.
This book is well worth the price!

Fearful Dog Bible, August 6, 2007 |
Reviewer: Beth |
As the owner of a very fearful little dog, this book has helped me so much. Step by step, easy to understand, and one of the most user friendly books I have ever read. Gives hints as to helping the dog in all life situations and addresses fears from thunderstorms to men in baseball caps. This books talks about training, exercises, and how to modify the environment for the fearful dog. Plus it helps to identify those fears more clearly so they can be addressed. Must have for anyone who has or works with fearful dogs. |

Another Fantastic Book!, December 27, 2007 |
Reviewer: Elizabeth Coburn |

The textbook for fearful/shy dogs classes!, February 2, 2008 |
Reviewer: Cinder Wilkinson-Kenner |
I teach a series of Shy Dog classes through Greater St. Louis Training Club at the Humane Society of Missouri, and this is the book we use as our text. It is the most comprehensive, yet understandable, resource for defining fears, creating treatment and training plans, and following through with the plans. Our students are having great success with this book. Some of the dogs have moved into regular group classes and all have greatly improved their quality of life! |

Vital Resource for Anyone with a Fearful Dog, June 26, 2009 |
Reviewer: Ann Dupuis, CPDT |
'Help for Your Fearful Dog: A Step-by-Step Guide for Helping Your Dog Conquer His Fears' is exactly what the title implies.
In Part I, Nicole Wilde explains the difference between fear and aggression (many 'aggressive' dogs are actually reacting out of fear) and how to recognize each. She discusses various causes of fear, and some tips for prevention. There's a chapter on 'the face of fear' (how to recognize the specific body language and vocalizations that indicate a fearful dog) and another chapter on human body language and how to use your own body language to help your fearful dog.
Part II sets the 'Foundation for a Calm Dog.' This section presents Nicole's 'Firm Foundation System' which focuses on management, physical well-being, leadership, and training to help your fearful dog. This information is completely compatible with similar foundation-building chapters in 'Click to Calm' by Emma Parsons. ('Click to Calm' is a must-have book if your dog is also reactive -- barking and lunging etc. -- in fearful situations.) 'Help for Your Fearful Dog' also explains the roles of nutrition, excercise, and mental stimulation in reducing stress and anxiety.
Part III has step-by-step instructions for teaching 'Skills' that will help you and your dog cope with scary situations. These include exercises in relaxation, attention, and targeting (teaching your dog to touch things on cue). There's also helpful advice on skills you can use to help teach your dog the skills he'll need.
Part IV provides a complete behavior modification program that builds on all the previous chapters. Topics covered include equipment, handling skills (how to control and direct your dog's behavior without adding to his fears), techniques (including classical conditioning, counterconditioning, desensitization, operant conditioning, and other scientifically based approaches to modifying behavior), all clearly explained. The vital topics of troubleshooting and measuring progress are also discussed here.
Part V covers specific fears and how best to help dogs learn appropriate behavior in these situations. The list of specific fears she covers is extensive, and includes fear and reactivity towards guests in the home, fear of family members, veterinary visits, fear of the car, crate, or stairs, thunderstorm phobia and sensitivity to sound, touch, and motion, and many more.
In Part VI, Nicole discusses complementary therapies. These include massage, TTouch, acupuncture and acupressure, homeopathy, flower essences, drug therapy, and aides such as body wraps calming caps, and DAP (Dog Appeasement Pheremones).
In sum, this is a comprehensive, well-written, well-founded in science and experience, and vital resource for anyone dealing with a fearful dog.

A Dog Training Staple, March 15, 2010 |
Reviewer: Crystal Saling |
By far the most comprehensive book written to adress fear-based behaivor issues. It discusses every aspect of therapy including food, DAP, anxiety wraps and other such devices, and many CC/D protocols for several different fear-based behaviors. No dog trainer/ behavior consultant should be without this book and no dog owner with a fearful dog should be either. |

Very good!, February 18, 2013 |
Reviewer: Serena Marangoni |
Great step by step guide on how to address the most common fear issues in your dog. I give it 5 paws because it does what it tells very well although (totally my fault) I was looking for something different when I bought it. This is not a book that delves into the reasons for fear issues or how to prevent them. It was an interesting reading all the same, it's a training guide on what to do about common problems - and that it does very well - If you have issues you want to resolve it's a great book. My fearful Golden Retriever improved a lot, she would heartly recommend it!!! |
