Expanded Description:
For anyone who wants to know more about aggression or dog behavior. As the book says, Aggression has a wide range of manifestations. And, it shows how to address reactive or aggressive behavior, with over 400 pages of text, drawings, and photographs.
This book does not just discuss aggression. It describes in great detail protocols to use for behavior modification. Starting with prevention, the reader learns about common mistakes owners make to promote aggression in their dog, and how to avoid these mistakes. In the behavior modification section, you will learn about how to build trust with the dog, using positive reinforcement. Shows how to achieve this level of trust with hundreds of exercises to promote appropriate behavior and modify inappropriate behavior. In the practical management section, the reader is prepared for a lifelong regimen of keeping his dog safe. The exercises in this book will be a salvation for problem dogs and a guide for prevention for others. Anyone involved with dogs will find a wealth of information about dog behavior in these pages and practical "do-able" solutions for problems.
What professionals are saying about Aggression in Dogs
Brenda Aloff is a pioneer in our field. Clicker trainers have proven that "it can be done" with competition obedience, agility, flyball, service dogs, indeed in all fields of what might be called "performance training." But Brenda takes our technology into a field long considered the ultimate bastion of the force trainer: rehabilitating and training the "aggressive" dog. Brenda shows clearly, most importantly through her detailed case histories, that one can address the issues posed by these dogs in a constructive, effective way without losing oneself in the murk of "dominance" theory and all of the mythology that surrounds it. This book is a worthwhile and necessary addition to any serious trainer's library. Morgan Spector, author of Clicker Training for Obedience.
There are standards in the world...Campbell's on soup, Bud on beer and now, Aloff on aggression. Almost every dog training book I've ever read has provided me with some gem, or at least some tidbit, I can use. This book, however, is the mother lode. If you need to understand aggression, Aggression in Dogs is the book for you! Missy Parker, RVN, President, National Association of Dog Obedience Instructors
This book is a "must have" for all trainers, kennel personnel, veterinarians and support staff. Not just for aggressive animals, Aggression in Dogs is an excellent reference tool for anyone interested in understanding canine behavior and the prevention of aggression. The protocols are field-proven effective. Robert Wenzel, DVM |

One of the Best, May 2, 2003 |
Reviewer: pamela richardson |
I ordered this book thinking that I was going to get a good overview of management of aggressive dogs. What I got was one of the best written and most concise manuals of dog behavior and training that I have ever read!
The authors training techniques can be used to teach basic obedience right through advanced work and behavior modification besides.
If I was asked to name only one book that would cover the things that most trainers need to know, it would be this one. |

A Lifesaver!, June 12, 2003 |
Reviewer: Daphne King |
Bought this book right when it came out, attended the author's aggression camp and can't rave enough about this book and the author's methods. For someone with an aggressive dog, this book can change your life and your dog's. Several times I've thought I just can't deal with my wild Elkie mix but Brenda's step by step instructions and positive methods have kept me going. My best friend said that the change in Sadie is nothing short of a miracle. Brenda is honest about expectations and the work involved but she guides you all the way. Fantastic!!! |

I can't say enough good about this book. It is a practical workbook that explains step by step all sorts of games, exercises and protocols. I estimate there are over 100 hours' worth. You will be able to start working with your dog right away. There is also plenty of great material on dog psychology and why dogs act aggressively, which you can read either before, during or after the how-to exercises. Even if your puppy hasn't yet shown aggressive behavior, he or she could benefit from the preventive exercises in this book. Finally, this book has all the information about how to get the dog to understand what the clicker means that I thought would be in Karen Pryor's otherwise wonderful Don't Shoot The Dog, but wasn't. I'm going out on a limb. I'm a first-time, self-taught dog trainer and if I were going to a desert island with my still-learning Dachshund and one book, this is the one I would take! |

some good/some bad, November 9, 2004 |
Reviewer: PD |
To be honest, I have not read the entire book. I was skimming it first and some of the information in it is good, however, I felt the bad was SO bad, I just couldn't read anymore. The parts where the author talks about using a head halter and using your foot to force the dogs head down gave me the chills. She even warns that your dog may bite you! (and to use a muzzle if this is the case!) She also talks about forcing (my word) the dog into what looks like to me a dominance down. She warns against small children doing this without adult supervision. My thought is that if the dog is so touch sensitive, one should train the dog to accept that kind of handling - how about a 'settle' cue?! - not forced into a very submissive position. To me, these practices are not systematic desensitization (If the dog was so nervous that the handler felt they had to force the dogs head down for an aggressive reaction, then, in my opinion, the session was pushed too far and was the handlers error, not the dogs.) I shudder to think what might happen if anyone actually does these things with their aggressive dog.
I am sure that many people could get alot out of this book, but for me, the first association was so bad, that I can't read anymore. Sorry, I really wanted to like this book. |

Not only for Aggression!, March 9, 2005 |
Reviewer: Beth Barkley |
Don't let the title fool you, this is a comprehensive behavior book! Sections II, IV, and VII are worth the price of the book! Buy 'Culture Clash' (Jean Donaldson), and this book, and you are set to go. Yes, it's pricy, but the four other books you could buy for the price of this one would NOT give you the information Aloff presents. I ABSOLUTELY recommend this book for the professional or amature behaviorist, and the dog owner who wants to communicate with their dog and have a pleasant relationship! Oh, and the book is excellent for learning how to modify aggressive behavior! |

New Trainer MUST have!, September 6, 2006 |

This has been a valuable guide for me as a new trainer. It covers so much more than what the title says. I find that I am constantly going back and rereading sections as new challanges come my way |

good for trainers not for owners, September 14, 2006 |
Reviewer: ZKV |
very good book for trainers that already understand enough to make their own choices - I wouls be afraid of a accident or worsening situation with a owner that just copies from the book because agression is serious and dogs vary so much it is hard to write instructions that will work for all. To continue on the review of the person who said it is really sad that she instructs to use a halti and pull down the dog to a down, and that he might bite, I agree with the review: I would not do it, as I also hate using head halters-especially for dogs who are agressive because of handling (just flat collar +muzzle if needed). I wish there would be more nuances to this technique.
My favorite part of the book are the teaching of nice intros to other dogs, very useful and works well! |

Great for Dog Professonals, January 10, 2008 |
Reviewer: Cheryl Schaeffer |
While this book may be very interesting to owners with aggressive dogs, I think this is even more important to people who work with dogs such as shelter staff, rescue workers and trainers.
I've found this book very well written and easy to understand. It gives incredible insight into the less attractive side of some dogs and how to work with the behaviors. Definitely should be a reference in so many facilities. |
