A MUST Have!!, April 17, 2005
Reviewer: Jennifer Ortiz
I can not stress enough how informative and effective this book is. It tells you everything from teaching your dog to sit, how to provide a healthy diet, to how to handle aggression. I've had this book since my dog Sasha was 4mnths and now 1 year later I still reference frequently. I've purchased this book for everyone I know with a dog and they have all found it just as useful as I did. Definately a must have!!

Super!, October 7, 2006
Reviewer: C. Sanders
This is an excellent book for anyone interested in training their own dog or for professional trainers. It offers a positive based perspetive on dog training and can help you solve almost any problem with your dog. Very helpful and very inspirational! Please read this book if you own a dog.

I stand corrected. :-), January 25, 2007
Reviewer: Betsy & Biscuit
Hi! Thanks to curiosity, I went to my local bookstore in December and checked this out this book in person, since it didn't look like it was by 'that OTHER guy.' Sure enough, as noted in the review below, I was wrong -- and I am happy to stand corrected. This book actually looked very good in the bookstore, and I almost bought it for my own training bookshelf -- until I remembered I could order it from Dogwise. (This revised review will automatically replace the original 'word of warning' review, which appeared two reviews down.) Thanks.

The ORIGINAL Dog Whisperer, January 9, 2007
Reviewer: pal2k9s
This book was written by Paul Owens - NOT the man who now claims to be a 'Dog Whisperer' on TV. A poor review below seems to think that this book is by 'that other guy'. Not true!

Paul Owens completely understands how to effectively communicate with dogs in a non-threatening manner, and how to relay that information to the average pet owner. Paul's training techniques promote trust and confidence between the dog and owner. His training methods also cover relaxation methods for the handler.

Every dog owner should be reading this book (and viewing Paul's DVD as well!). Success lies within!

Plastic bag material, February 23, 2007
Reviewer: J Miller
This book has an odd new age proselitizing feel that overwhelms the minimal amount of decent information presented. The feel good spin of this book is deceptively appealing but distracting.

There are just to many other good books out there to be wasting your time on this one.

I carry plastic bags in my coat pocket for this kind of stuff.

REAL Dog Whispering!, July 3, 2008
Reviewer: Ann Dupuis
Before Cesar Milan became a TV star as 'The Dog Whisperer,' Paul Owens was using real 'dog whispering' techniques - positive reinforcement training - to help dogs and their owners. 'The Dog Whisperer: A Compassionate, Nonviolent Approach to Dog Training' by Paul Owens should be on every dog owner's bookshelf - or better yet, in their hands, open and being read.

Not just a training book (although there's plenty of excellent training advice here), 'The Dog Whisperer' is a comprehensive overview of everything you need to know to have a well-behaved dog and a wonderful relationship. Diet, play, exercise, stress, communication, leadership: they all affect your dog's behavior, and Paul Owens explains how to manage these to your advantage.

As for training: from 'How Dogs Learn' through 'The Lessons' to 'Dealing With Problem Behavior' you'll find everything you need to start you on the path to a better-behaved dog and a happy, healthy relationship with your animal companion.

Fantastic all-around dog training manual, March 15, 2010
Reviewer: Crystal Saling
This was the first general dog training book that I have read that actually talked about how important food is to behavior- that wasn't written by a veterinary behaviorist. There are sections about the actual research on social structure of wolves and dogs, sections about how to calm yourself in order to train your dog appropriately and a good long section of step-by-step directions on how to train your dog. I really like Paul Owen's perspective on dog training and the story about his cross-over journey from chain and yank to committed cookie pusher. Wonderful book.

Really good for any dog owner, March 16, 2017
Reviewer: perseas
The book is a holistic approach to dog training. Pleasant to read and valuable mostly to amateur trainers.
