a must-have, July 30, 2006
Reviewer: Sue Brown, Love My Dog Training
If you buy only one book about training your dog, make it this one! A very quick and inexpensive read at only 15 pages, it gives you in very concise, easy-to-understand terms the basic pointers you need to have a well-behaved dog. I recommend this as a starting point whether you continue with any other training or not. I like this one so much that I include a complimentary copy for each client in my Puppy Pre-School and Basic Training Group Classes.

This is so far one of the best small book that I have seen. Gives you how and what to do well explained to be the pack leader.

Forget Cesar Millan. This is the way to do it! Everybody wins, no one gets hurt, and life becomes easier and more peaceful.

Some of this material I already knew, especially regarding what is sometimes referred to as 'No Free Lunch' or 'Nothing in Life is Free.' But I'm now using 'body blocks' with considerable success to teach one of my dogs that he gets nowhere by pawing at me for attention -- as Trisha McConnell points out, just pushing him away or trying to ignore him doesn't work.

Buy this little book. If you're like me, you'll need to read it over and over for it all to really sink in, so keep it close at hand.

Simple but still very interesting book. It's short but you get a lot of info. It's a good book if you want to understand how to be 'authoritative' in a positive way. I also like that it suggests how and when you can relax the discipline, so you can be consistent without being too strict.

I hesitated buying this booklet because I thought that for the few pages that it has, what can it teach me that I don't already know? I've read MANY (close to a hundred) books on dog training and raising dogs. I've also watched seasons and seasons of the very popular dog rehab TV show. I knew that I had to be a more effective pack leader but I wasn't feeling comfortable about the 'poking' and leash corrections. To this day I regret having done those and glad I found positive training. However, I haven't read any positive training books that touched on pack leadership and how I could do it effectively without dominance. While I believe that my own energy is at play, I struggled to have my dogs see me as the pack leader, until I read this book! The body blocks proved to be useful to getting there, because the book taught me how to do them properly. I kid you not, it worked within minutes of implementing them. My dogs had a bewildered look on their faces as if wondering 'what the heck is going on here?' I can't wait to keep using these techniques more to reinforce the positive training with my dogs. Thank you, Ms. McConnell!

Small in size but big in value. A fully acceptable approximation in order to rule your dog in a healthy way.
