I disagree, July 1, 2003 |
Reviewer: Sarah |
This is a good book for learning the different stages in puppyhood but I would have to disagree with some of the corrections used on certain behaviors. One specific thing I did not agree with is the scruff shake. You should never grab a puppy by the scruff and shake it. It could cause physical and mental injury. |

Great for New Dog Owners, August 4, 2003 |
Reviewer: Barb |
This is a great book for a new puppy owner. It is a wonderful guide to how the puppy will grow and develop and what behaviors will occur during each stage. I wish that I would have had this book on hand prior to getting our puppy as we did not know very much about the puppy's first few weeks of life were handled. We may have done things differently.
As in all self-help/information books many of the training ideas that are in the book are common-sense. Try them, if they don't work for your dog, try something else. |

Starter Book, June 10, 2009 |
Reviewer: Zonya |
Never had a puppy? Haven't had a puppy in a long while? Need to brush up? This is the right book to begin with since it covers developmental stages your puppy will experience and what to expect. The book does a great job of covering the owner's responsibilities to the new puppy to help him/her grow to be a great, well behaved companion better able to live in the human world. A must read. |

Great for someone anticipating a puppy addition!, December 1, 2012 |
Reviewer: OkoNicer |
I really loved this book. First off, now in it's 4th edition the suggestions of 'scruff shaking' that other reviewers disagreed with in 2003 has been entirely removed from the book, so take that into account.
This book will walk you through the development stages of your puppy while it's still with the breeder and the beginning of living with you, heavily focusing on the first three months of your puppy's life. It does touch on some training, and while good, I feel where it really shines is when talking about each stage of puppy development and puppy behavior, as well as the simple growth chart.
Fascinating information for a nice price, I would recommend this for anyone wondering how their puppy's brain is developing at 2, 3, 4 weeks old and beyond to three months old. |
