Expanded Description:

Historic research on wolves and other canids
Our knowledge of the behavior and evolution of wolves, foxes, coyotes, and Canis familiaris—the domestic dog—was extremely limited until the publication of The Wild Canids in 1975. Edited by Dr. Michael W. Fox, one of the premier researchers in the field, the 30 scholarly studies presented in this acclaimed volume represented a major step forward in understanding these fascinating animals. It also laid out a number of areas of inquiry that stimulated further study. In the nearly 35 years since its publication, The Wild Canids has been a valuable resource for conservationists in protecting and re-introducing canids into the wild and in familiarizing dog trainers and behaviorists with the science of canine behavior. Today’s readers now have the opportunity to delve into the original research by such pioneers in the field as Bekoff, Belyaev, Zimen and many more.

Professionals endorse The Wild Canids
One of its great merits (is) that…besides the encyclopedic knowledge compiled in it, it also contains so many indications to lines of promising research still open to us. The hope is well justified that this book will attract the attention of many biologists, ecologists, and ethologists, to a great group of mammals.
Konrad Lorenz, author of On Aggression, Man Meets Dog and other titles

The Wild Canids is an excellent source for anyone who wants to know about the behavior, ecology, and conservation of these amazing animals. Much of the information is as important as it was when the book was first published.
Marc Bekoff, University of Colorado; author of numerous books including The Emotional Lives of Animals, Wild Justice: The Moral Lives of Animals, and Encyclopedia of Animal Behavior

Michael Fox’s The Wild Canids is a book with a very special place on my bookshelves. I got it in 1984, sent to me personally by Dr Fox. I wanted that book desperately, I couldn’t get it, and I took courage to write to Dr. Fox and ask for it. He sent it to me free and with a letter of encouragement, which went right to the heart of the young biologist I was at the time. The Wild Canids: Their Systematics, Behavioral Ecology and Evolution is one of the most important scientific books written on the topic....it is a classic that should be in the libraries of all serious students of animal behavior as well as professionals.
Roger Abrantes, author of Dog Language: An Encyclopedia of Canine Behavior and Evolution of Canine Social Behavior

Editor Michael W. Fox, a veterinarian and ethologist, was born and educated in England. He received his D.Sc. and Ph.D. from London University. He is the author of more than 30 books on animal behavior, training, and health. Contributors to this volume included many distinguished scientists who specialize in behavioral psychology, ecology, genetics, and animal and human sociology.

The Wild Canids is a Dogwise Classic book. Titles selected for this series are out-of-print works that are interesting, informative, and historically significant. They are the foundation for our current knowledge and Dogwise Publishing is keeping them alive for today’s dog enthusiasts.
