Expanded Description:
This guide is like having a friend explain private training to you! You'll start with exercises to assess your current skills, learn about sales and scheduling, and view sample phone scripts. Then learn to take a history: questionnaires are broken down into lifestyle, training and behavior issues, and include explanations of what your clients' answers might mean. Get pointers on designing lesson plans and protocols, tips on promoting client follow-through, and an entire chapter devoted to commonly asked question. There's even a bonus section with ready-to-use forms, contracts and handouts. Learn what to do if an owner cannot perform an exercise correctly; which exercises should never be done back to back; which questions are crucial to ask in aggression cases; how to work with two dogs in a home; special considerations for working with elderly clients; whether to offer discounted rates to shelters or rescues; how to handle a recommendation for euthanasia; where to get further training on beavior issues, and much more!

Great resource, October 31, 2010 |
Reviewer: Nick Hof, CPDT-KA |
I had bought this book a while ago when I first began training and found it useful. I just re-read it again because I am starting to do in-home training more than I have in the past and I loved the book the second time around!
Nicole goes over so much useful information. One of the most useful sections I found was on the phone skills. I also really appreciate the extensive questionaires and all the great information listed in the Resources section. |

Must have for Instructors!, December 27, 2007 |
Reviewer: Elizabeth Coburn |
This book is fantastic at getting to the heart of what trainers do before even working with a dog. She makes it easy to understand the need for a good history on the dog, and how to get more from the human counterpart. |

Excellent book, March 8, 2005 |
Reviewer: James O'Heare |
This is a great book. Many books prepare you for behavior modification and training but this one fills a gap in preparing us for how to actually deal with clients. Nicole is a humorous writer and the book is a fun and informative read.
