In-Depth Art of Shaping Behavior, May 17, 2007
Reviewer: Debi Davis
What a great DVD for in-depth study of shaping in action! Virginia Broitman has another outstanding film with the expected top-notch production values we've come to expect from a 'Bow Wow' creation:
Terrific lighting and sound, fabulous narration and a carefully-scripted presentation that wastes no viewer time getting to the important points of the program.

I appreciate the detailed presentation on how to shape--both directed and non-directed learning are shown in depth, with tons of tips for avoiding problems that can crop up when trying to capture subtle actions. It's this rich detail that makes 'The Shape of Bow Wow' so valuable and unique. We watch the process unfold so clearly that all the 'well, what if?' questions are answered before they can be asked.

It's always a great joy to see dogs learning how much fun it is to learn--and watch those light bulbs turn on in their minds. Ms. Broitman shows the process happening with puppies, green adolescents, and older dogs, which is a treat. We don't just see the finished product, we see the process in great depth, and are able to see areas where our own shaping plans may have faltered, and how we can fix them.

We're offered terrific opportunities to see dogs totally engaged with the learning process, and given detailed help in how we can recreate the creative problem-solving to reproduce this at home with our own dogs.

Learning to shape effectively is not always easy, and for most of us, there are steps forwards and backwards. We move ahead, and we falter, we goof. What Virginia Broitman brings home to us so effectively in this DVD is how much we often miss in small, subtle behaviors that are the building blocks to shaping any behavior. We are given ample opportunity to review these subtle moments and learn how to capture them with excellent timing.

The free-shaping sections of the DVD are truly excellent, and will be of immense help to those who don't understand why free shaping exercises are so important in any serious training program. There are many 'Aha!' light bulb moments for viewers as we watch dogs become more creative, begin to offer more and more behaviors rapidly, and we learn how to keep up with our very quick dogs and capture those moments with precision.

This is so helpful for those of us training service dogs, as we so often need to be able to shape with precision to get the kinds of behaviors that will be life-saving and practical. By learning how to refine each behavior leading to a chain of behaviors that leads to a finished task--we can zero in on exactly what is needed without the 'sloppy edges.'

We also can see how creativity can be used to build new skills and tasks quickly--often in highly distracting and hostile environments. When our lives are at risk, our dogs' ability to problem solve creatively may save the day.

More than just a 'how to shape' primer, The 'Shape of Bow Wow' give us a chance to understand the process of directed and non-directed shaping from the inside out, so that we can shape and fashion a learning plan for whatever our needs may be--whether our dogs are doing service work, therapy work, agility, obedience, tricks for media or simply good manners at home.

Especially helpful are the segments on effective reinforcement delivery, timing, and when to raise criteria during the shaping process. The sections on honing observational skills are so helpful, as are the step-by-step instructions on how to add and change cues.

There's a lot of 'good learnin' packed into this well-organized 55 minute DVD, and I recommend it highly. This is also a wonderful DVD for teachers to have for students who are still not fluent with the shaping process.
