Expanded Description:

Understanding families will help trainers solve dog problems
Experienced dog behavior consultants and trainers know that their work is as much about people as it is about dogs. The intense and sometimes complicated nature of relationships between families and their dogs can interfere with even the best-planned canine management and behavior modification program. Dog owners can unknowingly undermine the most promising plan but The Family in Dog Behavior Consulting will help animal behavior professionals be more effective by teaching them how to assess the impact on family dynamics that include relationships with companion dogs.

Get better results in your dog behavior consulting and training business
• Learn the basics of family systems theory and how it applies to family interactions with dogs.
• Understand key concepts such as life-cycle changes, triangulation, “rules,” joining, and reframing.
• Help families learn to engage successfully in problem-solving.
• Utilize the study questions in the appendix to enhance your learning.

What dog training professionals say about The Family in Dog Behavior Consulting
True compassion for all concerned comes from an impartial therapeutic attitude so all parties involved feel “safe” to express and learn. The judgmental tendencies that many have makes their work less effective—therefore fewer animals are helped.
Brenda Aloff, CDBC, Author of Canine Body Language and Aggression in Dogs

Understanding the dynamics of families is critical to our success in changing the behavior of the pet. And sometimes we even need to change the behavior of the human client.
Dani Weinberg, PhD, Author of Teaching People, Teaching Dogs

If only I had Lynn’s book when I started working with people and dogs…(Now) I finally understand why I was not successful in changing (human) behavior…I needed to think much more about how to assess and influence change within a family rather than lecturing them on the needs of the dog!
Mary Burch PhD, Author of How Dogs Learn.

Finally, a book that gives dog trainers and behavior consultants the tools they need to address the family dynamics that impact follow through with behavior and training recommendations!...Lynn Hoover shares ways to facilitate change and avoid becoming entangled in family dysfunction.
Veronica Sanchez, M.Ed., CABC

What reviewers are saying...

animaltalk.com
“The first book of its kind, this is really a book for professionals working in the field of dog behavior consulting but it's a fine read for any intelligent dog owner who would like to understand how the family dynamics impact the family dog. Hoover sets out to show how to create the best possible outcome for dog and family during counseling sessions, providing insight into the human psyche. The dog is part of the family grouping and the point is to create a positive atmosphere for all concerned. Hoover, the founder and president of the International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants is also a clinical member of the American Association for Marriage and Family Therapy, making her well-qualified to write this book.” Rated 5 paws out of 5 Darlene Arden

Excellent- read it several times, July 7, 2009
Reviewer: Crystal Saling
This book has so much useful information in it on how to deal with the human end of the leash during behavioral consultations, it will take several reads to truly digest it all.

An Essential Book, September 17, 2006
Reviewer: Niki Lamproplos, CDBC
‘Dogs easy, people hard’ is a truism often uttered by trainers and behavior consultants. If you’ve ever left a consultation scratching your head and feeling as if you were a feather buffeted about by the cross-winds of the family you’d just seen, this book is for you!

Regardless of the species in which we have expertise, no animal comes for training or consultation without a human in tow. It is the human we must influence to effect change and often this process is not straightforward. The Family in Dog Behavior Consulting brings much-needed assistance to those of us who work with families in our practices. Lynn Hoover helps us not only understand why families may resist change, even to help a beloved dog, but what to do about it. She does so with clarity, humor, compassion, and honesty.

This book provides a theoretical framework work that assists us in understanding how families function and somethimes fail to function. And most importantly, it does so in an altogether accessible manner, through the generous and cogent use of anecdotes from Lynn’s own years of experience. Her book is truly a gift to the profession and, ultimately, to the families and dogs we serve.

Excellent resource, August 31, 2006
Reviewer: Veronica Sanchez M.Ed. CABC
Finally, a book that gives dog trainers and behavior consultants the tools they need to address the family dynamics that impact follow through with behavior and training recommendations! Every animal behavior consultant can identify with the situations described in her book, and Lynn Hoover shares ways to best facilitate change and avoid becoming entangled in family dysfunction. Whether dealing with a married couple that blames each other for the dog's behavioral problem, or the owner who cannot let go of the 'ghost' of a previous dog, Hoover offers concrete strategies to facilitate communication and promote positive change. Hoover's experience as a family therapist and her skills as a counselor help the reader understand the nuances behind family systems. She simplifies complex concepts and gives examples of how they impact pet - pet owner and pet owner - consultant relationships.

Lynn brings a fresh, new and essential perspective into the field of animal behavior consulting. While there are countless resources on addressing animal behavior issues, this is the first book that addresses how family interactions impact success in resolving pet behavior problems. This book is packed with useful information, intriguing examples and is entertaining and often humorous to boot! While the book's title is specific to 'dog behavior consulting,' the book is a must-have for trainers and behavior consultants of all species.
