Simple and Specific- Great for Day-to-Day Use, March 11, 2012 |
Reviewer: Amelia Looper |
Dunbar provides the reader with simple but specific instructions in an accessible format. The first half of the book addresses what to expect from a new puppy and the proper means by which to bring one home. The second half consists of ready-to-use protocols for socialization, housetraining, chewtoy training, teaching bite inhibition, and beginning obedience. This book stood out compared to other puppy books I've read in that these protocols were sufficiently straightforward and simple that I felt I could implement them right away. Also stands out for its recommendations for maintaining puppy training throughout adolescence, an often neglected topic. |

Don't make a snap judgment, April 17, 2011 |
Reviewer: StdPoodleLvr |
When I started this book, my first thought was that I had wasted my money. I understand he is trying to emphasize that great dogs don't just happen; they are created. And those with unrealistic expectations have puppies who wind up in the pound.
But as a responsible dog owner who loves training my dogs for all kinds of sports (and is expecting a puppy soon), I didn't need the lectures on the need for housetraining, crates, controlling the puppy's access, etc. I'm fully prepared to start training from Day 1 and I felt that some of his cautions about never having a single accident in the house was a bit over the top. Although, in fairness, I kept thinking of people who do everything wrong with their puppies and wait to seek help until they've created a monster who could benefit from such blunt advice.
However, late last night (e-book on Kindle!), I got into the nitty gritty. The actual advice on schedules, feeding techniques, ways to stop nuisance barking before it starts, teaching the pup an on/off switch. Marvelous advice. I am taking notes and making up a schedule. This is going to be invaluable. I've got two marvelous canine good citizens living with me, but I expect with this book that this time we'll get there without the bumps in the road. Highly recommend, even if you have confidence that you can raise a well adjusted puppy. |
