Expanded Description:

(Publisher sticker sometimes comes loose but DVD has not been opened.)

The original puppy training video and still "the leader of the pack." Voted BEST VIDEO (2000, 2001 & 2002) by the Association of Pet Dog Trainers. Learn the gentle and enjoyable methods of off-leash training and socialization that made the SIRIUS philosophy the international standard in companion dog training. Dr. Dunbar developed SIRIUS classes in 1981, so his Malamute puppy could go to school. At that time, of the 50 dog training schools in the San Francisco Bay Area, NONE would allow puppies until they were six months to a year old. SIRIUS Puppy Training redefined and revolutionized dog training. Before SIRIUS there were no puppy classes, and virtually no food lures and rewards in training. The SIRIUS methods have been adopted and adapted by most caring dog trainers worldwide.

This wonderful DVD was designed to be used as a companion to your actual attendance in Sirius Puppy Training Classes. It is not meant to be used without the classes as you and your dog will miss out on sooooo much if you don't go! You can use the DVD to get a head start on classroom work.

The shouting in the DVD that put one person off concerns teaching the puppy to get off/stop nipping a small child, telling the puppy NO!!!! so you can whisk him outside and have fewer pee spots to clean up, and teaching the puppy bite inhibition (no one wants a dog that bites them). Along with the loud 'OFF!' that is used in bite inhibition, the pup gets bumped on the nose. It doesn't seem to be hurt by the action but it does work! Using your voice effectively has long been a mainstay of good training. I didn't find bumping the pup's nose to be a violent act nor did I think the use of loud NO and Off was offensive.

In addition to teaching puppies as young as 12 weeks old OFF LEASH OBEDIENCE,this DVD can help you greatly with housebreaking,it can show you how to teach your pup not to bite your hands, etc. with its needle sharp baby teeth, educate you in some basic dog behavior, help with socializing your dog with other puppies as well as other people to prevent fighting and fear and much, much more. In the Sirius classes I attended, we all learned how to trim our pets' nails and also taught our pets tricks. Teaching our pets the names of family members was another great part of the course.

The DVD is great because it shows everything real people with real puppies in a real beginner puppy training class do and how they do it. There is no trickery here.

I do think the DVD should be updated so that choke chain training methods are not shown as the next step in training. A second DVD could be made, showing both lure training and clicker work, perhaps. There were a couple of other spots that I think should have been edited out but over all the DVD is a classic that everyone should own a copy of.

I recently acquired this DVD to have on hand for neighbours and friends who might otherwise be led astray by public-sphere dog training of the flavour of what is found on TV shows these days and felt confident that Ian Dunbar would be a good solid choice.

I was surprised and dismayed when I watched this and saw Ian shouting loudly at pups, encouraging small children to do so, and teaching owners to aggressively 'hit' the noses of pups to teach them 'off'. I also noted that the video did a poorer job than I had hoped at explaining what to do at home, and taught more by showing than explaining or laying out stepwise the how-to of training.

Granted, this DVD would certainly be better than nothing, and Dunbar was way ahead of his time at the time of production. Certainly, many of the techniques he uses in 1981 have not changed and are still in use now, but I am sure Dunbar himself has mellowed his training style over time. I will not be recommending this DVD to first-time dog owners struggling to find a way to communicate with their dogs: it is my feeling that there are much better gentler DVDs on the market these days.

I got this video some 7 years ago to train our Basenji pup, and it was a great help. At the time, I had no idea that Dr. Ian Dunbar was one of greatest dog trainers around. Turns out the video has won numerous awards and is quite a best-seller.

I watched it again recently, and was struck again by how useful it is.

Many of the people taking the puppy training class are children themselves -- some look as young as four or five years old. This would be an excellent video for children to watch. Both kids and adults can benefit from watching Sirius Puppy Training several times.

I think that even people with a fair amount of dog experience would benefit from Sirius Puppy Training -- unless they have already watched other videos of Ian Dunbar's. I'm a great book lover, but the video gives you a lot that you couldn't get from his (or anyone's) books.

This video does not use clicker training, but it is based on the same principles as clicker training, so it is very compatible with that approach. Also note that it is designed for puppies under the age of 18 weeks without major behavior problems.
