Summary: When we think of positive reinforcement training, we often think of a cookie - and
that’s a great start! This book picks up where most training leaves off by setting out a
systematic plan to help dog owners learn how to gain compliance away from home, under
distraction and without a cookie in hand!

Expanded Description:
You are a dedicated pet owner who has put considerable time and energy into training your dog.
As a result, your dog has a reliable set of behaviors such as sit, down, stay and a recall - under
pristine conditions. But now you’re stumped; you’re unsure how to get those behaviors away
from home and off leash - in short; when you really need cooperation!
This book will help you gain cooperation under a range of circumstances and with only about
ten minutes of training time per day! This book will take you through a systematic and
comprehensive plan to get you where you want to be:
A reliable companion who cooperates off leash, away from home and….when other things are
going on around you!
This book has been split into three parts:
The first part is educational. It provides information about the theory and philosophy of training.
This section will be valuable for everyone, but especially if you’re the kind of person who likes to
know why you’re doing something a certain way before you do it.
The second part is practical. It’s the “how-to” part of the book. Here, Denise lays out the plan
you’ll be following to help your dog respond to your cues even when the world is exciting or you
don’t have cookies. This portion is extremely systematic and specific.
Finally, the third part is problem-solving. It will help you troubleshoot any issues that arise. In
addition, if you find that you really enjoyed the training process, it will guide you in finding more
opportunities for you and your dog!

Great how-to manual, March 6, 2016 |
Reviewer: Jill Marple |
I'll admit I'm awesome at starting behaviors and then getting stuck. This is exactly what I needed. This book tells how to work very methodically, step-by-step to get your dog to be able to respond outside the familiar training environment. |

Sensible, Can-Do!, January 18, 2016 |
Reviewer: Cheryl Cornett |
I've seen this book advertised at several of my 'online' dog places where I hang out, and was immediately intrigued by the title. Purchased it after my sweet Am Staff failed her Canine Good Citizen test. She was brilliant on 9 out of the 10 tests- but when we were required to loose leash walk in the pet store, Bess.. just... couldn't. There were too many distractions. When the book arrived, I started to skim; before I knew it, I was over halfway through it and dinner was going to be late- it's that readable. I love how the book is set up: there's an educational piece (how dogs learn), the practical bit (how to go about the actual training) and a trouble shooting/ problem solving bit. It's so down to Earth and practical. These are lessons I can do easily without a lot of fuss and fanfare. Denise writes with humor and grace. It's evident she knows and loves dogs. She tells you what signs to look for from your dog so that you'll know when to slow down or back up because you're going too fast. Training should be fun and this book reflects that. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book & learned a lot. Bess is up for her retest in 4 weeks- I'm 100% confident we'll ace it this time around. Highly recommend! |
