Expanded Description:

Secrets to Feeding Dogs for Optimum Cellular Health and Longevity Revealed in Groundbreaking New Book
Vibrant health begins in the cells. Learn how to transform your dog’s cellular health with the power of nutrigenomics in this ground-breaking new book. Nutrigenomics (a combination of the words nutrition and genome) is the study of how the foods we and our pets eat “speak” to our cells to regulate gene expression, which in turn plays a huge role in determining whether a person or animal will live a life of vibrant health, or one plagued by illness.

Scientists now know that while we can’t change the genes we are born with, we can change how those genes behave, which is exactly what authors W. Jean Dodds, DVM and Diana Laverdure show us how to do in their newest book, Canine Nutrigenomics: The New Science of Feeding Your Dog for Optimum Health from Dogwise Publishing.

Read Canine Nutrigenomics and discover:
• How to tell which foods create optimum gene expression and vibrant health at the cellular level and which foods lead to chronic disease.
• The amazing healing power of functional foods.
• The “Three Keys” to easily creating a foundation diet for your dog based on the principles of nutrigenomics.
• How to use functional ingredients to treat, manage and even reverse a wide variety of chronic canine health conditions.
• The 10 “canine functional superfoods” and how they can supercharge your dog’s health by optimizing his gene expression.
• The signs of a food intolerance/sensitivity and how to stop it in its tracks.

And much more!

You can’t change your dog’s genes, but you can change how those genes behave when you read Canine Nutrigenomics: The New Science of Feeding Your Dog for Optimum Health!

Your dog’s diet “speaks” to his cells!
Nutrigenomics is the new science of how diet affects gene expression at the cellular level, creating vibrant health or chronic disease. Optimum health begins in the cells—and this book shows you how to achieve it for your dog!

Praise for Canine Nutrigenomics
Many dog parents will find longed-for hope when they read how they may have the power to prevent, improve and even resolve many serious canine health conditions. Understanding nutrigenomics and its effects on the genome is the first step, but the authors don’t stop there; they offer sensible solutions for health in every chapter. Chapters on cancer, arthritis, aging, weight control and more, describe in practical terms not only how nutrigenomics can make a difference, but also exactly what to DO about it.
Barbara Royal, DVM, CVA, author of The Royal Treatment: A Natural Approach to Wildly Healthy Pets

Want to help your dog live a long and healthy life? This informative, easy-to-read book, based on the discovery of how food affects genes, will empower you to do that. Practical and useful, it will also be a key text for veterinarians and animal health professionals at our College (www.civtedu.org).
Dr Barbara Fougere, veterinarian, author and educator in Integrative Veterinary Medicine, Co-Founder College Integrative Veterinary Therapies

This seminal book, confirming that nutrition is the first medicine, is not just for the health of dogs. It is a major contribution to the health-through-food revolution, which will expand the minds and practices of veterinarians and canine caregivers and should be a required text for all students of veterinary medicine and nutrition.
Dr. Michael W. Fox, author of Healing Animals & the Vision of One Health

Nutrigenomics is a cutting-edge topic, with little published in veterinary medicine. This book provides a great resource for dog parents seeking an alternative nutrition plan for their four-legged family members.
Justine Lee, DVM, DACVECC, DABT, author of It’s a Dog’s Life... but It’s Your Carpet and It’s a Cat’s World... You Just Live In It

This wonderful book by Jean Dodds, DVM and Diana Laverdure is the best resource I have ever read on the topic of canine nutrition. It answers all of the questions that a dog parent could possibly have, thoughtfully exploring each of the nutritional elements in a dog’s diet and carefully describing what to feed in order to ensure our dogs receive everything they need for optimum health and longevity.
Myra Harris, RN, author of Puppy Intensive Care, Advanced Canine Reproduction and Puppy Care and Canine Reproduction and Whelping

By reading this book you will learn not only what is in most commercial pet foods, but also what should and should not be there for optimum wellness and to prevent disease based on the new science of nutrigenomics. As a veterinarian who specializes in toxicology, I highly encourage all pet parents to read this book to learn about feeding your dogs with whole food nutrition.

What reviewers are saying...

THE AUSTRALIAN SHEPHERD JOURNAL
“If canine nutrition boggles your mind, of if you’re searching for the root cause of canine allergies, gastrointestinal disorders, skin irritations, or chronic yeast infections, you will definitely want to pick up a copy of Dr. Jean Dodds’ new book, Canine Nutrigenomics. The Science of Feeding Your Dog for Optimum Health (Dogwise 2015). Most of us are familiar with Dodd’s minimum vaccine protocols, as well as NutriScan, her food sensitivity and intolerance diagnostic test for dogs. Now she has teamed up with Diana Laverdure, an award-winning canine health writer, to bring you the best and latest information about creating healthy dogs through food. And who doesn’t want that? The concept of healthy food for canines isn’t new. Plenty of dog owners work hard at feeding first-rate nutritional foods, be that dry, raw, dehydrated, or home-cooked. Mostly we’re told, “Feed a good, high-quality diet,” but what constitutes good food or a high-quality diet? (In my world, caffeine is a good and essential food group.) Dodds’ book goes beyond the superficial and looks at how we can alter our dogs’ (or our own) epigenome—the structural layer that surrounds our DNA and the proteins attached to it—which, in turn, can dramatically alter our health.
Nutrigenomics (nutri-gen-om-ics), according to Dodd’s, is the science of how diet affects the epigenome, and thus gene expression (the process of turning genes on or off inside a cell), which in turn alters our genetic predisposition toward health or disease.
Dodds translates all the scientific mumbo-jumbo into easy-to-understand language. You don’t need a Ph.D. in science to read this book.
You will learn how diet has contributed to many of the chronic illnesses prevalent in our dogs, and, more importantly, Dodds gives you all of the latest scientific findings on nutritional ingredients that can prevent, manage and even reverse these illnesses. The book starts with an overview of nutrigenomics and how our epigenome communicates with our genes and tells them how to behave. Other chapters look at functional proteins, functional fats and oils, and so forth. No doubt you will find the section on honeybee products doubly fascinating. Honey, is, after all, one of the top miracle foods. Did you know studies have identified raw honey’s ability to help heal ulcers, manage diarrhea, and soothe sore throats? Okay, but did you know it is also beneficial in treating topical wounds, soothing indigestion, and, here’s the big one—it may help prevent seasonal allergies?
Dodds also discusses building your dog’s optimum diet with the Basal Diet, which is the nutritious base to which dog’s individual needs, specific health issues, etc. Think of it as the foundation of superior nutrition—kind of like the foundation of a building or brick wall. Everything starts with a solid foundation. Absent a sold foundation, the brick wall or building, or in this case canine nutrition, will eventually crumble. (No pun intended!)
There’s also a chapter on the Basal Diet for high performance dogs in which Dodds explains the three energy systems: the adenosine thriphosphate-creatine phosphate (ATP-CP) system; glycolytic energy system; and oxidative energy system. Again, don’t worry if you flunked chemistry—you won’t need that class to understand Dodds’ excellent and easy-to-follow terminology.
Are you supporting your canine athlete’s performance with carotenoids, Co-Q10, berries, pomegranates, or bioactive nutrients, such as king of bitters, flame of forest, milk thistle, purple coneflower, curcumin, Siberian gingseng, valerian root, chamomile, as purslane, to name a few? … Perhaps the meat-and-potatoes of the book is Part III—Functional Food Solutions for Common Canine Health Conditions, which includes weight control, arthritis, cancer, canine behavior and cognitive aging, and other health issues. If you have been in dogs long enough, you most likely have lost one or two of your treasured companions to cancer. Sadly, cancer is a fact of canine (and human) life. Dodds notes in the U.S., cancer is the leading cause of death in dogs older than two years. She also writes in depth about the link between foods, environment, and cancer, and of course, the risk of vaccination to immune-compromised dogs.
I could go on and on about this book I found it informative and chock full of expert advice backed by medical science (lots of citations referencing and sourcing studies). I think you will agree at $24.95 it’s a bargain.”

Fantastic Book!, January 28, 2016
Reviewer: Johanna Bouchard
A wonderfully comprehensive look at the budding science of nutrigenomics for dogs -though just as easily applicable to us humans!

Dodds covers a lot of ground in this book, looking at how nutrition effects the expression of genes (epigenetics) and the very best ways to harness this new information to create total health and disease prevention in our dogs. Topics discussed include functional vs non-functional foods, specialized approaches in diet to aid weight control, arthritis, cancer, behavioral and cognitive decline, etc.

I do wish that the author had spent more time discussing toxicity, and in particular heavy metal toxicity , and it’s effects on genetic expression and overall health, as well as more information on nutrigenomic approaches to behavioral conditions. Overall, however, I really enjoyed this book and found it to be a wealth of information regarding general health. The section on nutrigenomics and cancer was especially informative and very well put together.

The book, as a whole, has a very user-friendly layout, is easy to skim, and the more scientific aspects are broken down into layman’s terms so that anyone can understand. Highly recommend!

Brain food, March 27, 2015

I've long been an advocate of improving the way we feed dogs and a fan of Dr. Dodds, so I was thrilled to read her latest work, Canine Nutrigenomics. It's a challenging title and even concept, but the authors do a fantastic job of keeping the science accessible to all while providing enough meat to satisfy scientific minded readers. I like that some of the meatier details are in the Appendix so as not to interrupt the flow of the book.

This book is well organized and provides the information you need to create a custom diet for your dog. There are several chapters devoted to addressing the special needs of dogs with health issues including cancer, aging, arthritis, weight control, epilepsy, low thyroid, etc. It's not a cookbook so don't expect to find 'recipes' for diets. Rather it teaches concepts for what to include and what to leave out of a diet. While clearly advocates of fresh, raw foods, the authors are realists and know not everyone can do that so they include tips on improving whatever diet you are using.

I especially liked the information about nutriscan.org. I plan to have my new puppy tested so I can avoid feeding foods that cause an inflammatory response and give my pup the best chance at a long healthy life.

This book about food for dogs is definitely brain food for dog lovers. 5 paws!
