Expanded Description:

Revised 2nd EDITION! K9 Kitchen is an indispensable guide to the facts every dog owner needs before making feeding decisions.

Cutting through the current myths that surround home-prepared canine diets, this book presents facts as well as respectful consideration to feeding each dog as an individual. We begin with basic information, moving toward a better understanding of the nutritional needs of dogs, and providing analysis of commonly fed raw meaty bones and green tripe. The book provides 60 diet plans (20 cooked, 20 raw and 20 combination diets), the NRC 2006 nutrient requirements for adult dogs, and a step-by-step guideline to help the reader formulate a balanced diet.

Debunks many of the myths surrounding canine diets by showing that each dog is an individual with unique nutritional requirements. Provides a starting point and then shows ways to modify diets for dogs with problems ranging from pickiness to chronic medical problems. Packed with facts and studies, but still contains simple advice for feeding the family dog. Case histories, also how to individualize a diet for your own dog!

"The goal of the book is to present you with facts that will help you arrive at the best feeding choice for your own dog, and to address a few of the many myths that are often presented as facts." -- Monica Segal, AHCW

"Once again, Monica Segal has taken on the many questions and controversies surrounding homemade and raw diets and beaten them. Her approach is well investigated, fair, and comprehensive. This is a must read for pet owners who need responsible information about homemade diets." -- Susan G. Wynn, DVM

Great Resource!!, March 31, 2012
Reviewer: K-9 Coach
Nutrition has always been of great interest to me. Ever since I got hooked on horseback riding at the age of 5, I was curious to find out what horses eat in the wild, what they are fed on farms and what they should really be getting fed in order to lead healthy lives. I try to stay up to date on research into equine nutrition in order to be able to provide the best for my two horses. When I got my Beagle, Coco, I knew I had a lot of reading to do in order to truly understand the most nutritious foods to feed her. Since dogs are mainly carnivores, I had to expand my knowledge of equine nutrition to include all kinds of proteins from other animal meat. The book by Monica Segal, K-9 Kitchen Your Dogs’ Diet: The Truth Behind The Hype, was an excellent read for the topic of canine nutrition. After finishing the book, I did not feel like I had to go much further in my research. Monica Segal was very thorough in explaining the difference between feeding a raw diet, a mixed diet of cooked and raw and a processed diet (dog food from the grocery store). She explained the pros and cons of each and was very clear to address that each diet should be tailored to the individual dog.

What was invaluable was her nutritional analysis of the different grains, vegetables, fruits and meats that can be fed to dogs. She also included an important analysis of the minerals and vitamins that need to be balanced in our dogs’ diets and the potential dangerous interactions that these minerals and vitamins can have with each other.

While Ms. Segal is a proponent of feeding a raw diet, she is clearly looking out for the best interest of the individual dog. She recommends trying different protein sources, slowly introducing new vegetables and monitoring how your dog reacts. Raw, meaty bones are a topic that comes up quite a bit in her book, because of the myth that bones are bad for dogs. Ms. Segal is quick to clarify that cooked bones are very dangerous and should never be fed to dogs, however raw bones with meat on them are an excellent source of nutrition, with the added benefit of exercising the dogs’ jaws and satisfying their urge to chew. I found it very helpful that she included several recipes along with their nutritional content. These recipes helped me to gauge whether or not I had the time and means to provide a raw and/or cooked diet for Coco.

I would highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested in canine nutrition and getting some answers to the plethora of myths that surround what you can feed safely your dog.

great book for your nutrition library, January 13, 2012
Reviewer: Debra Eldredge
What and to feed your dog is becoming a serious matter for discussion among dog fanciers. Scares from Chinese ingredients, concerns about bacterial contamination and food recalls that could include everyone from home cookers to commercial diets to raw feeders, keep dog lovers jumping when it comes to figuring out dinnertime for their dogs. Unfortunately there are many self prescribed experts, so you need to read skeptically and critically.

K9 Kitchen: Your Dogs' Diet: The Truth Behind the Hype 2nd edition by Monica Segal, AHCW is a good place to start your canine nutrition education. Monica Segal is a certified in Animal Health Care from Guelph University. She has gone beyond that degree to self educate extensively in canine nutrition. As well as researching on her own, Ms Segal has made extensive use of mentors and contacts, including many veterinary nutritionists.

While Ms. Segal clearly leans towards home prepared diets (cooked or raw) the book is fairly even handed on discussing what is best for your individual dog. Understanding food labels, explaining NRC (National Research Council) listings of nutrient requirements for dogs and, for those who wish to feed raw, her nutrient analyses of raw meaty bones of various types is invaluable.

Ms Segal takes you through the steps of working out a diet, evaluating supplements - helpful or useless - and determining which method of feeding is best for your dog. She does offer recipes with the caveat that you still need to look at the individual recipe with a careful eye and keeping your dog in mind. For instance if the recipe calls for beef heart and your dog is allergic to beef, clearly that won't work. She also provides basic steps for you to design and balance your own diet. The chapter on supplements is worth the price of the book by itself.

I really like the common sense approach she offers. A dog can be fed a combination of raw and cooked meals if that works best for you; some dogs do best on cooked meals and there are dogs who thrive on dog food #10 from the local feed mill down the street. I highly recommend this book for your library whether you plan to do home diets for your dog or simply want to learn more about canine nutrition.

This is a trade paperback with plenty of useful and clear charts for you to work by.

An updated edition based on the most recent NRC recommendations will be released in mid to late 2008. I'm really interested in reading this book, but I'll wait for the new edition.
